Drew Davis named July Teen of the Month

ROCKINGHAM — You might say July’s Teen of the Month, Drew Davis, had a leg up on the competition.

Davis, who was the RO’s Athlete of the Week in September of 2019, was a soccer player and kicker for the Richmond Senior High School Raiders football team.

He was nominated by Deborah Knight, outreach coordinator for Leath Memorial Library.

In addition to being an athlete, the son of Joey and Michelle Davis also made Eagle Scout.

“Drew Davis is the son everyone would love to have,” Knight said in the nomination. “I never had a son, but if I did, I pray he would be a gentleman like Drew.”

She said she’s known Davis from the years his mom brought him to the library’s summer reading programs.

“Michelle, his mom, also brought him to everything education and fun at the library,” she continued. “Drew was always polite with his ‘yes, Ms. Debbie’ and ‘no, Ms. Debbie.’

Knight said even in his younger years, Davis was always ready to help if she needed assistance handing things out during a program.

“In his youth, I would see him out and about and he would always smile and speak,” she said. “Most young people do not want to speak to the library lady around their friends but he always did.”

During his senior year, Knight says Davis approached her about doing his Eagle Scout project for the library.

“It was perfect timing,” she said. “We need to paint our new Maker Space area and our children’s room needed a little brightening. He was up for the job. He found funding for the job and recruited all his help. Within two weekends, our children’s area and Maker Space had new paint and all the old shelving (had been) taken down and put in storage.

“The area looks amazing,” Knight continued.

She also referred to Davis as “a hero without a cape.”

“My grandson Drew looks up to Drew,” she said. “Drew has always spoke to my grandson, took

time after a Raider game to take a picture with him and most recently sent my grandson, Drew, a birthday card and present.

Knight said he didn’t have to that, since he had graduated and was getting ready to go off to college.

“This young man still took the time to help celebrate a young admirer’s day,” she said. “If  everyone could have seen my Drew’s face when he got that card, everyone would want a Drew Davis as a friend.”
