Experienced family nurse practitioner joins PMC oncology team at FirstHealth of the Carolinas

PINEHURST — FirstHealth and Pinehurst Medical Clinic continue to expand access to cancer services with the addition of family nurse practitioner, Michelle Hunt.

Hunt previously worked at Comprehensive Cancer Centers of Nevada, where she collaborated with medical oncologists to care for cancer patients actively receiving treatment. She is a licensed Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner through the Oncology Nursing Society.

Hunt said she became interested in oncology while working in palliative care and hospice for six years.

“My experience working with cancer patients and their families led me to specialize in oncology and hematology,” she said. “I appreciate the ability to bring my skills in communication, symptom management and care coordination to the oncology field while continuing to learn from these patients and providers.”

She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Nursing from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in Boston, Massachusetts. Originally from Massachusetts, Hunt previously lived in Asheville, North Carolina, and said she is excited to return to the state.

“I love the experience of the four seasons with more temperate climates than my native New England, and have found the people to be very welcoming,” she said.

Outside of work, Hunt enjoys reading, practicing yoga and traveling with her husband, Ryan, and their two children.

Hunt will care for patients alongside other PMC Medical Oncology and Hematology physicians Laura Hanson, M.D.; Charles Kuzma, M.D.; Robert Pohlmeyer, M.D.; Saritha Ravella, M.D.; Thomas Richard, M.D.; Matthew Scarlotta, M.D., and advanced practice providers Susan Bazinet, R.N., FNP-C, MSN, OCN; Bobbi Clark, AGNP-C; Alicia Libby, P.A. and Sarah Pearce, DNP, as well as, FirstHealth’s Medical Oncology and Hematology physician Jeffrey Klotz, M.D. under one roof in the new FirstHealth Cancer Center.

In addition to state-of-the-art treatment facilities, the four-story, 120,000-square-foot cancer center houses palliative care services, research and clinical trials, navigation and support services for patients and caregivers, nutrition services and a dedicated wellness center.
