HAMLET — Pastor Allison Farrah, staff, and members of First Baptist Church welcomed around 500 trunk-or-treaters on Halloween evening.

More than a dozen vehicles were decorated by church members, and a wide assortment of treats were passed out to the hundreds of children and adults as they strolled through the circular driveway. It was evident that much thought and preparation had gone into getting ready for this event, which many people shared that this is their favorite place for getting into the Halloween spirit.

Young E.J. and Emani Crank, accompanied by mom Alesha and Aunt Briana, were among the first to arrive, dressed as trolls with brightly colored upswept wigs.

Kelly Vanscyoc accompanied her children Jake, dressed as The Flash, and Joshua, wearing a scary ghoul mask and a black tattered robe.

Karolina Meeks was a big hit as the Disney character Cruella de Vil, much to the delight of church member Ruth Ann Harris, sitting by her decorated auto passing out treats, also dressed as Cruella.

Fairview Heights third-grader Cameron Hunt was dressed as Chewbacca of Star Wars, and 12-year old Cody McCullough maneuvered his way through the crowd wearing a dinosaur outfit that was quite realistic and entertaining. Alivia Perkins, a 6-year old at Laurel Hill Elementary, was dressed as a black cat, and shared that she always comes with her mom to trick or treat at the First Baptist Church.

Jeremiah Sloan wore a metallic outfit with flashing shoes, sharing he was portraying the iconic Michael Jackson. Other youngsters were dressed as everything from witches, ninjas, cheerleaders, pirates and bumblebees, to Slender Man, Paw Patrol characters and Spiderman.

So many of the costumes were very creative and allowed the children to amuse others in the crowd. Even Minnie Mouse traveled all the way from Disney World — her spokesperson shared — to be here and take pictures with the children, wearing a shiny red dress and bow with white polka dots. City Councilman David Lindsey had a spot set up with hay bales for the photos.

Trunks were decorated by First Baptist Church members in a variety of ways.

Jenny Thompson had her white convertible Volkswagen tricked out as a gumball machine. Julia and Irving White are Richmond Raider football fans and had their vehicle decorated as if were part of a football stadium, complete with a goalpost.

The youth group adorned a hearse with NASCAR memorabilia, with a banner reading “Take The Highway to Heaven.”

Melvia Holt passed out candy with Scooby Doo adorning her trunk, and Brenda Peele and Cathy Faust decorated their vehicle with lots of jack-o-lanterns, twinkling lights and autumn leaves.

Connie Davis and Bobbie Huff passed out bags of fresh warm popcorn. Mike and Corinne Swink’s Ghostly Sweet Treat Shop was voted the crowd favorite with its assortment of homemade goodies, surrounded by dozens of dangling ghosts and goblins.

Farrah expressed her appreciation to all of the church members who put so much time and effort into making the Trunk or Treat a success, and also to members of the community who came to the event.
