PINEHURST — Lung cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers in America, and it is the leading cause of cancer deaths annually.

The American Cancer Society estimates about 238,340 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2023, while about 127,070 will die from the disease. These numbers are more than colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.

In partnership with GO2 Foundation for Lung Cancer, FirstHealth will host its annual Shine-A-Light event at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the recently opened FirstHealth Cancer Center (135 Page Road North, Pinehurst, N.C.).

The event is free and open to the public and will include a presentation about how FirstHealth plans to increase lung cancer screening in the Sandhills. Attendees will also be able to take part in a lighting ceremony.

FirstHealth’s event will be one of more than 200 similar events held across the country during November, which is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
