HAMLET — Free line dancing lessons will be offered this weekend at Cole Auditorium on the campus of Richmond Community College.

The lessons are being hosted by Transcend 2 Transform Dance Fitness, a nonprofit founded by licensed fitness and dance instructor Onequa Crump.

Teaching the lessons in the auditorium’s banquet room will be And 5678 Line Dance based out of Macon, Georgia, according to Crump.

“They are like the Beyonce and Jay-Z of line dancing,” Crump said, adding that her group is bringing in a Charlotte-based DJ for the event. “It’s going to be like a big line-dance party…It’s going to be fun.”

Crump said the instructors will be teaching beginners, “so that way everybody will feel comfortable.”

There is no list of the dances that will be taught, Crump said, adding that the instructors create their own, which have gone viral.

Crump said she is expecting “a wide array of ages” participating this year, from young to old.

There is no dress code, Crump said, however participants are encouraged to wear black, silver and gold — if they can.

Light refreshments will also be served.

There will also be information on Transcend 2 Transform Dance Fitness available. The organization’s mission is to “transform bodies one city at a time throughout the state of North Carolina.”

The event is free and open to the public and will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.

This is T2TDF’s second annual community event.

In 2022, the organization taught a variety of dance fitness genres, with about 70 people participating.

“We’re trying to do it different every year,” Crump said.

She added they are expecting more this year because “folks like to line dance.”

Crump also said her group is grateful for the support from community businesses.
