PINEHURST – FirstHealth of the Carolinas will celebrate its 32nd Annual National Cancer Survivors Day event on Thursday, May 30, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the FirstHealth Conference Center on the FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital campus, located on the corner of Yadkin Road (Hwy 211) and Page Road in Pinehurst.

The event is celebrated annually to honor cancer survivors, to raise awareness of the ongoing challenges of cancer survivorship, and to celebrate life.

This year’s featured speaker is Michael J. Sundborg, M.D., board certified gynecologic oncologist with FirstHealth Cancer Care, who will present on hereditary cancers.

Cancer is a common disease, so it’s no surprise that many families have at least a few members who have had cancer.

“The genes we are born with may contribute to our risk of developing certain types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, colorectal and prostate cancer,” says Dr. Sundborg. “Everyone has some risk of developing cancer, and in most cases the disease develops by chance. However, some people are genetically predisposed to developing certain types of cancer. These people have a higher risk of developing the disease than those in the general public.”

Dr. Sundborg’s presentation will focus on hereditary cancer risks and what individuals need to know about them.

This year’s Cancer Survivors Day theme is centered around quilting, “alone we are just a square, together we are a quilt.”

Quilts tell stories. They depict times and places, the lives of the people who make them, and capture slices of life.

In the spirit of making memories and sharing these stories, each attendee will create their own quilt square, and at the end of the event, all pieces will be formed together to create one uniformed quilt that will be displayed in the FirstHealth Outpatient Cancer Center.

The National Cancer Survivors Day event hosted by FirstHealth of the Carolinas is free to cancer survivors and guests (one to each survivor), but space is limited, and registration is required. Dinner will be provided. To register, visit www.NCCancerCare.org or call 800-213-3284.
