FAYETTEVILLE — Calling all car enthusiasts: Sustainable Sandhills will present the first Sandhills Drive Electric event on Saturday, Sept. 21 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Honeycutt Park, 352 Devers St. in Fayetteville.

Part of National Drive Electric Week, the Sandhills Drive Electric event will feature a variety of opportunities for drivers to learn about electric vehicle options in the region.

  • Test drive the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan LEAF and Tesla models
  • Enjoy a Kids Zone with crafts, solar cars and other fun activities
  • Chat with electric vehicle and alternative transportation advocacy groups
  • Visit the electric vehicle show featuring Tesla and other privately owned models
  • Enter to win raffles courtesy of CarQuest, Pep Boys, Starbucks and Texas Roadhouse

National Drive Electric Week is Sept. 14 to 22 and is a nationwide celebration to heighten awareness about the availability and benefits of plug-in electric vehicles.

Demands for electric vehicles and infrastructure investments are increasing throughout North Carolina. With its central location in the state and growing commuter population, the Sandhills region is uniquely positioned to advocate for these efficient and innovative technologies.

As the region’s leading 501(c)(3) non-profit organization for environmental initiatives, Sustainable Sandhills is the lead coordinator for the Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Air Quality Stakeholders Program.

“Now and in the future, electric vehicles will play an important role in protecting and even improving the air quality in the Sandhills,” said Jonelle Kimbrough, executive director of Sustainable Sandhills. “As we see more electric vehicles on our roads, we will hopefully see a reduction in our nation’s dependence on foreign petroleum for transportation as well.”

National Drive Electric Week is sponsored by Plug In America, Sierra Club, the Electric Auto Association, Nissan LEAF, Clean Vehicle Rebate Project and ClipperCreek. Sandhills Drive Electric is sponsored by ARRAY Magazine, ARRAYdio, Fayetteville Public Works Commission and Powers Swain Chevrolet.
