Third coronavirus-related death reported in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County has had its third COVID-19-related death.

The Richmond County Health Department made the announcement on a Facebook post around 8:15 Saturday night.

According to health officials, the deceased tested positive for the coronavirus earlier this month.

“Please join us in our sympathy for the family and friends of this resident of Richmond County during this most difficult time,” the press release reads.

No other details were given about the deceased.

It is not yet known if the individual was hospitalized.

The first death attributed to COVID-19 was reported on April 10; the second was on April 17.

Earlier in the day, the Health Department reported two more positive cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total since April 7 to 161. A single new case was reported on Friday.

Of those infected, 70 patients have recovered, according to the Health Department.

According to the Saturday update, five patients were hospitalized and 84 were under home isolation.

Out of all the testing done, 1,071 have come back with a negative result.

The age ranges of those who have tested positive (including recoveries) are as follows:

Age 0-18 – 18

Age 19-30 – 23

Age 31-40 -19

Age 41-50 – 32

Age 51-64 – 44

Age 65-up – 25

The number of cases per zip code are as follows:

Rockingham – 106 (39 recovered)

Hamlet – 47 (28 recovered)

Ellerbe – 7 ( 2 recovered)

Hoffman – 1 (recovered)

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services shows a total of 163 cases for Richmond County, two more than local health officials.

While this county is overreported, the state has been underreporting Moore County’s numbers for weeks.

On Saturday, the Moore County Health Department recorded 224 while the state only showed 201.

Six of North Carolina’s 100 counties have had more than 1,000 cases each.

Mecklenburg leads the state with 4,028 total cases. It is also the state’s most populated county. Following are Wake with 1,683; Durham with 1,552; Guilford with 1,227; Forsyth with 1,253; and Wayne with 1,112.

The total numbers (including recoveries) for other surrounding counties are as follows:

Union – 435

Anson – 64

Stanly – 72

Montgomery – 123

Hoke – 239

Scotland – 84

Robeson – 754

 

As of May 25, DHHS estimates that 14,954 patients in the Tar Heel State have recovered.

The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control last updated its numbers on May 29, reporting 180 cases in Chesterfield County and 161 in Marlboro County.

Health officials in the Palmetto State estimate there could be hundreds of more people in those counties who are infected but have not yet been tested.
