Hamlet’s Frederick C. Branch: First African-American officer in the Marine Corps

Frederick Branch, born in Hamlet, was the first African-American to be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps.

The first African-American to rise to officer level in association with the United States Marine Corps was from Hamlet.
