Asheville man charged with stealing keys, Tahoe from Richmond County home

ROCKINGHAM — A Buncombe County man is accused of breaking into a Richmond County home and stealing a SUV.

According to an arrest warrant dated Aug. 19, 51-year-old James David Liles Jr., of Asheville, that day broke into a home on Pinedale Drive, north of Rockingham, and stole the keys to a 2005 Chevy Tahoe — before taking off with the vehicle.

The warrant from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office shows Liles was arrested that day and charged with one felony count each of breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Liles was booked into the Richmond County Jail, where he remains under a $50,000 secured bond awaiting a Sept. 2 court appearance.

He has been ordered not to return to the property or threaten the alleged victim.

Online court records show Liles has a November court date in Burke County for speeding.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety show Liles has previous convictions from the coast to the mountains.

His yearlong parole ended Sept. 6, 2020 after serving two years for burning a public building and burning personal property in Buncombe County.

Records show Liles spent time at Morrison Correctional Institute in Hoffman while serving his sentence.

Liles was first convicted in 1986 of misdemeanor larceny in Pender County.

In 2003, he was convicted on one misdemeanor count each of assault on a female and assault on a police officer in New Hanover County.

Liles’ first felony convictions were in Union County:

  • 2010 – breaking and entering, larceny
  • 2011 – breaking and entering, possession of burglary tools

Records show Liles received probation in all cases except the Buncombe County convictions.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
