Charlotte fireman reportedly killed in wreck near Hamlet

Veteran and Charlotte fireman Patric Saunders was reportedly killed in a wreck near Hamlet on Monday.

HAMLET — A Charlotte firefighter was killed in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer Monday in Richmond County, WSOC-TV reports.

In the television station’s article is a link to a Twitter post mourning the loss of Patric Saunders, who the post said died in a motor vehicle accident near Hamlet.

Traffic was backed up for hours on the U.S. 74 Bypass after a Chevy Blazer collided head-on with a tractor-trailer around 6:30 p.m. Jan.4, according to officials with the Hamlet Fire Department.

WSOC reports that Saunders, 31, joined the Charlotte Fire Department in 2015 and was assigned to Station 21. He reportedly joined the Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department in Weddington while in high school and was a fireman there for 15 years.

The station also reports that Saunders was a medic in the military and had recently returned from a 13-month deployment in the Middle East.

The wreck is being investigated by the N.C. State Highway Patrol, which has not yet released any information to the RO.
