North Carolina Zoo’s black bear Holly passes away

ASHEBORO — Holly, a black bear who lived at the North Carolina Zoo for 24 years, was humanely euthanized on Wed., Nov. 6, 2019.  Holly arrived at the Zoo, along with another black bear male Yanu, on Feb. 13, 1995. Both were confiscated by the NC Wildlife Commission from an unaccredited roadside zoo in 1992 in Cherokee County. She was estimated to be 28 years old and wild-born. Her companion Yanu died at the Zoo in 2017.

ASHEBORO — The North Carolina Zoo recently asked the public to help name its newest family member — a baby boy chimpanzee born Monday, March 18.

The winning name chosen was “Obi” through an online poll on the Zoo’s website. Obi is a word of Nigerian origin meaning “one who charms others; heart.”

ASHEBORO — The North Carolina Zoo sadly announces that Maggie, the 46-year-old matriarch of the chimpanzee troop, was humanely euthanized on Friday, April 12, after a period of declining health. She lived a full life for her species— female chimpanzees typically live for approximately 40 years.
