ASHEBORO — The North Carolina Zoo recently asked the public to help name its newest family member — a baby boy chimpanzee born Monday, March 18.

The winning name chosen was “Obi” through an online poll on the Zoo’s website. Obi is a word of Nigerian origin meaning “one who charms others; heart.”

ASHEBORO — The North Carolina Zoo sadly announces that Maggie, the 46-year-old matriarch of the chimpanzee troop, was humanely euthanized on Friday, April 12, after a period of declining health. She lived a full life for her species— female chimpanzees typically live for approximately 40 years.

NC Zoo welcomes baby chimpanzee

ASHEBORO — The North Carolina Zoo announces there is a new addition to the chimpanzee troop! On Monday, March 18, 2019, a healthy baby was born to chimp Gerre. Both mother and baby are doing well, and the baby started nursing quickly. The gender of the baby has not been determined yet.

Familiar Faces to be Found at Norman Fest

NORMAN — The northernmost town in Richmond County is gearing up for its annual fall festival.

Norman Fest, now in its ninth year, will feature a few familiar faces in terms of musical acts and display booths on Saturday.

The Sand Band once again headlines the event, performing on the town’s outdoor stage from 7-9 p.m. Musical acts earlier in the day include the Randy Clay Band and Wayward Reason on the main stage and traditional country music in the town’s community building.
