LOS ANGELES – The Golden Globes had the eyes of the world on it Sunday night, as the uncertainty of the nation’s political and societal tensions weighed heavily on the red carpet. It was also the first major awards show since the emergence of several nationwide scandals.

But not all things were tense, especially for South Carolina native Aziz Ansari. The standup comedian and television actor, who spent time growing up and attending Marlboro Academy in Bennettsville, South Carolina, nabbed big honors for his show “Master of None.”

Ansari, whose father is a gastroenterologist and has an office in Hamlet, made history by becoming the first Asian male to win best actor in a comedy television series.

Master of None, which Ansari is a co-creator of and airs on Netflix, follows the story of Dev Shah (played by Ansari) as he traverses life through New York City. The show is said to shadow some of Ansari’s real-life experiences, and released its second season last fall.

With much discussion swirling around Hollywood about the #MeToo and “Time’s Up” movements aimed at ending sexual harassment, Ansari brought some much needed, and perhaps candid, comedic relief when he accepted the award.

According to a clip of Ansari’s speech, this is what he said:

“I genuinely didn’t think I would win because all the website said I was going to lose,” Ansari said as he addressed a laughing crowd during his acceptance speech. “Also, I’m really glad we won this one because it would have really sucked to lose two of these in a row.”

The Richmond Observer is currently reaching out to Ansari for comment at this time. Stay tuned for continuing coverage on Ansari’s historic win.
