PINEHURST — A pair of Richmond Senior High School golfers represented the Raiders in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A Mideast regional tournament on Monday.

Senior Ethan Brown and junior Ayden Mabe made the trip back to the postseason for the second consecutive year, competing individually this time.

Both golfers finished their season by shooting a new personal-best round at Pinehurst No. 6, which was the second straight week they played the par 72 course.

Competing in a field of over 70 golfers from around the region, Mabe posted an 88 (+16) and finished in a tie for 36th place.

Other golfers to also shoot the same score were Chris Ha (Jack Britt) and Kyle Baker (East Chapel Hill).

Not far off from Mabe, Brown closed out his career on the golf course for the Raiders with a 90 (+18). That score was good enough to put Brown, a four-year golfer for Richmond, in a tie for 42nd place.

Also posting a matching score to Brown were Luke Alderman (Jordan), Peter Bryan (Jordan) and Sandhills Athletic Conference opponent Jordan Palmer (Hoke County).

Head coach Keith Parsons spent the day on the course with both Raiders and said he was really impressed with how strong Brown and Mabe finished their season.

“Ayden and Ethan played so well yesterday,” Parsons said. “We talk all the time about getting better as the season progresses, and enjoying your best golf late in the season, and they both exemplified that. For both of them to finish with career-bests in the regional, with the course set up so difficult, says so much about how much time they devoted to practicing to be ready.

“Ayden was spectacular off the tee, easily the best I’ve seen him drive the ball,” he added. “And Ethan’s iron game served him well, giving him several good opportunities at birdie. I think they both realize they got the most out of their games yesterday, so being able to finish the season that way has to be satisfying for them.”

Neither Brown nor Mabe qualified for the NCHSAA 4A state championship. The cut for this year’s tournament was 80 (+8), seeing Mabe and Brown both within 10 strokes of making it to the championship.

Pinecrest High School won the 4A Mideast regional championship as a team, posting a score of 289 (+1). Green Hope High School was second (301, +13).

Junior Holland Giles also won the individual title for the Patriots, shooting a 69 (-3), edging Kose Owens of Holly Springs High School by one stroke.
