ROCKINGHAM — A child playing with a lighter caused a Saturday afternoon house fire on County Home Road, according to Rockingham Fire Chief Harold Isler.

Isler said the department received a call regarding a structure fire just before 5:30 p.m.

When crews arrived, Isler said there was heavy smoke and flames showing on the right side of the home.

Firefighters entered the home and entered the bedroom where the fire — which had spread to part of the attic, another bedroom and a bathroom  — started. Crews dropped the ceiling and suppressed the blaze, Isler said.

In addition to the burned rooms, the chief added that the rest of the home sustained heavy smoke damage.

After interviewing a child in the home, Isler said they discovered that the child had been playing with a lighter and set the curtains on fire.

The scene was cleared around 7:30.

The Red Cross has been called in to assist the family.
