Facebook serves me up a lot posts that are supposedly history. Often they’re false and a lot of them are about the Civil War and about Confederates in particular. They come from pages with names like “Defending the Heritage” or just “Confederates.” Facebook says they are “Suggestions for you.”

OPINION: Propganda and Republican hypocrisy

Republican Twitter pundits are all aghast at WRAL owner Jim Goodmon’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day speech in Rocky Mount. Goodmon criticized Republicans for failing our schools, extreme gerrymandering, and leaving so many North Carolinians without medical coverage in the midst of a pandemic. They say Goodmon cost his media company its credibility. Cry me a river.

Robinson raises $1.5 million for campaign

RALEIGH — With campaign finance reports coming later this month, North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson's campaign announced that he has raised more than $1.5 million. The donations come from 12,691 donors, according to his latest campaign finance report. Semi-annual reports for all candidates for office in N.C. are due Jan. 31.

You’ve likely seen talking heads or social media mavens blasting opposition to critical race theory by linking it to a refusal to teach American history. More specifically, the accusation often states that conservatives merely want to do away with teaching the history of the American civil rights movement or other black experiences in the past, such as slavery. It’s one of the most dishonest pivots in the public square today, particularly given that the American civil rights movement shares many qualities with conservatism.

OPINION: Cawthorn's handlers got it wrong

When Carolina Journal first reported first-term U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s intention to abandon his current district next year to run in an adjacent one, CJ quoted Cawthorn as saying his decision was part of “a strategy to increase conservativism in North Carolina.”

Cancel culture at UNCW drives leadership out

WILMINGTON — Describing a culture of silencing conservative voices at UNCW, one trustee was driven to quit last week with an openly critical post of Seahawk nation on Facebook. Former UNCW Board of Trustees member Woody White revealed what he sees as a troubling trend in treatment of conservative faculty and students.
