ROCKINGHAM — Several people are facing charges for allegedly having methamphetamine in Richmond County.

According to warrants, 31-year-old Amy Brigman, of Hamlet, and 29-year-old Lauren Breanna Smith, of Rockingham, were caught with an unspecified amount of meth at the Budgetel Inn on Aug. 26.

Deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office also allegedly found a meth-smoking pipe.

They were arrested and each charged with one felony count each of possession of methamphetamine and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for and controlled substance; and one misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brigman and Smith were each booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $30,000 secured bond. Smith was still in jail on Sept. 8, but Brigman has since been bailed out.

They are scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10.

William Travis Witwer, of Cordova, was allegedly caught with an unspecified amount of meth on Aug. 30.

Records show he has also since bonded out of jail.

Witwer is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 17 on a charge of possession of methamphetamine, as well as a charge of obtaining property by false pretenses from an incident on July 7, records show.

Jail records indicate that 31-year-old Steven Alexander Knight was booked on Sept. 2 on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He remains in jail under a $2,500 secured bond and also is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 17.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show the current pending charges aren’t the first meth-related charges for Knight.

In 2016, Knight was convicted on two counts of possession or distribution of a meth precursor, landing him in prison for two years and nine months, records show.

Less than three months after being released, Knight was sent back on a reimprison violation for three months. Eight months later he was back behind bars on a post-release revocation and released again on April 8.

Brigman was convicted of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance in September 2018, records show.

Smith has been convicted twice of violating the state school attendance law, in 2014 and 2018, according to state records.

Witwer has no previous convictions in this state.
