RALEIGH — The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is seeing a sharp increase in COVID-19 clusters among school sports teams. For the period between July 1 and Sept. 2, 2021, clusters among school sports teams accounted for 45% of all clusters in North Carolina middle and high schools, despite most school sports activities not beginning until August as schools began the fall semester. School sports teams are urged to follow NCDHHS guidance for youth sports.

RICHMOND COUNTY -- As the RO proudly supports local middle school athletics, here's this week's edition of our middle school sports report. 

Middle school volleyball is coming to an end, while football is ramping up and cross country opened its season Thursday.

CORDOVA – What could have easily been a horrific tragedy was miraculously minimal Thursday morning after a Cordova Middle School student was struck by a car on Ledbetter Street near the 8th Street intersection.

ELLERBE – The excitement of campaign week has drawn to an end as ballots have been cast and the Ellerbe Middle School Student Government positions have been chosen.

ROCKINGHAM – It was a reminiscent atmosphere Saturday as the Rockingham High School class of 1972 came back to see the school from which they graduated 45 years ago.

HAMLET – The Rockingham Middle School Lady Rockets volleyball team showed “teamwork” in its match versus biggest in-county rival, Hamlet Middle School. Rockingham won both matches of the double-header 2-0 by the scores of scores of 25-14, 25-9 and 25-21, 25-7.

Hamlet Middle Batters Cordova, Takes Both Games of Doubleheader

CORDOVA – The Hamlet Lady Red Rams went on the road Thursday and swept the Cordova Cavaliers in a double header 2-0, 2-0.

HAMLET -- The Hamlet Lady Red Rams  volleyball team defeated fellow Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference opponent Ellerbe in both matches of a doubleheader Tuesday. The Lady Red Rams the first match 2-0, and took the second match 2-1.
