ROCKINGHAM — Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a call involving a student at a local school early Monday afternoon.

Kylie DeWitt, public information officer for Richmond County Schools, confirmed that a student left the campus of Rockingham Middle School and returned around 1:15 p.m. with a garden machete.

“Rockingham Middle School was on a lockdown for a short period of time to ensure the safety of all students,” DeWitt said. “No students were harmed, and Rockingham PD remained on campus until all students were safely dismissed at the normal time.

“As always, the safety of our students and staff is our top priority.”

Investigators with the Rockingham Police Department say the student, whose name can not be released because of age, was taken into custody and charges are pending.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Richmond County Schools Special Police also responded.
