ROCKINGHAM — First responders are urging Richmond County residents to stay off the roads as snow continues to fall across the area.

The Rockingham Police Department posted a message to its Facebook page around 8:15 p.m. Friday saying side streets and back roads were already covered with snow and ice.

Officers had already responded to three wrecks “all due to road conditions” in the city limits, according to the post.

Snow started falling in northern areas of the county like Ellerbe and Derby shortly after 4 p.m. By sundown, snow was reported as far south as the Wolf Pit area.

More than a quarter inch had fallen in East Rockingham by 9 p.m.

Many residents are posting photos of snow angels and other fun in the winter weather. Some have even made weather report videos.
