HAMLET - Like many careers, visual art is a heavily male-dominated industry.  However, in Richmond County, Alexandria Baker is a competitive and award-winning artist.

Having won eight art awards and attending North Carolina’s Governor’s School West, Alexandria is an academically and artistically successful artist.

At the age of six, Baker won her first art competition for a local competition and continued to win awards at district and state level.

Caleb Dickens:  Destined for Stardom

HAMLET - We all know of many outstanding students, and it is during this time of year (i.e., end of school session, graduations, etc.) that accolades and kudos are bestowed upon such individuals.

But there is one particular young man in Richmond County whose talents are so profound as to defy the imagination.  Caleb Dickens, son of Jill and Mitchell Dickens, was recently accepted into the North Carolina School of the Arts and, though you may not realize just how big of an honor that is, consider this:  he could have possibly matriculated at NCSA in two, if not three, different areas of study.

HAMLET - The Hamlet Police Department issued charges for cocaine and marijuana possession, driving while impaired, and numerous traffic safety violations in a span of one week.

On Tuesday, May 15th, a traffic stop on East Main Street led to charges of felony possession of cocaine and simple possession of marijuana.

HAMLET - Yesterday, Monday, May 28th, was this year’s designated date upon which we as a nation officially remembered and honored members of our armed forces who gave their lives in defense of our country.

HAMLET - Hamlet police officers continue to seek information regarding two separate cases of shots being fired.

The first incident involved a report of the firing of shots at Washington Court Apartments at 10:34 p.m. on Monday, May 7th.

Upon arrival, officers found a parked vehicle with the back window shot out.

A window in an apartment had been shot through as well.

Offices spoke to several residents, all having heard the shots being fired, but no one could identify a suspect.

The second occurrence of shots being fired was reported on Thursday, May 17th at 7:53 p.m.

Officer responded to 320 Spring Street subsequent to a report of a subject having been shot.  Upon arrival, officers found the victim sitting on the porch with a bullet wound to the right leg.  The wound was deemed to be non-life-threatening.

The victim stated that he had been walking on Kent Street when he was shot, but had no idea as to who the perpetrator may have been.

It was thought that a shot may have been fired at the Spring Street residence as well.

These incidents remain under HPD investigation.

Anyone with any pertinent information is asked to contact the Hamlet Police Department at 910-582- 2551.

HAMLET - "Litterbug, litterbug fly away home,
Your house is on fire and your children are gone."

Perhaps that is a loose explanation as to the situation on a daily basis for some of the travelers who use Old Laurinburg Road east of Hamlet in traversing back and forth to their respective destinations – they are all experiencing emergencies of some type and simply don’t have time to wait till they get to their own trashcans to dispose of their personal waste material on their own property.

ROCKINGHAM - Richmond Senior High School hosted their annual awards banquet on Thursday, May 17th, in the cafeteria.  After the welcoming commentary by Principal Jim Butler and the invocation by Board of Education Chairman Wiley Mabe, the accolades, kudos, and awards began to flow.
