PINEHURST – Southern Pines Women’s Health Center, a FirstHealth Clinic, has expanded its obstetrics and gynecology team by adding Board Certified OB/GYN Lourdes Castano, M.D.

Dr. Castano received her bachelor of arts from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She earned her medical degree (M.D.) from New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York, where she graduated with honors, and completed her OB/GYN residency at Cornell’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, where she also acted as chief resident of the program.

“We are very fortunate to have someone join us with a fantastic educational background who is board certified, multilingual and has years of experience,” says John Byron, M.D., provider at SPWHC.

Dr. Castano brings more than 25 years of experience to SPWHC, having practiced privately the majority of her medical career where she kept busy delivering babies and performing surgeries.

“I’m looking forward to using my decades of experience to serve women in the Sandhills,” says Dr. Castano. “I’m curious to learn how medical issues differ from patient to patient, and to experience how the practice of medicine compares to the New York area I’m relocating from.”

Originally from Spain, Dr. Castano calls herself a “New York native,” and is a native speaker of both English and Spanish. She has relocated to Moore County from New York with her recently retired husband.

“When my husband was ready to retire, I was not,” she says. “However, I was tired of those many mid-winter nighttime drives to the hospital to attend deliveries. We had visited Pinehurst several times, and on one of those visits I was fortunate enough to find SPWHC and that they were looking for a new provider. The rest is history. Thankfully, we purchased a house walking distance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, so now I get to deliver close to home and say goodbye to those wintry nighttime drives!”

Southern Pines Women’s Health Center, a FirstHealth Clinic, offers OB/GYN services in Raeford, Richmond and Moore counties. To make an appointment with Dr. Castano, call the Moore County clinic at 910-692-7928, ext. 5604.
