New robotic knee surgery technology revolutionizes total knee replacement at Moore Regional

FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital

PINEHURST — FirstHealth of the Carolinas proudly announces the arrival of state-of-the-art robotic knee surgery technology called the ROSA Knee System at Moore Regional Hospital, enhancing the experience and outcomes of total knee replacement procedures. With this advanced technology, patients can benefit from precise and personalized surgical solutions, marking a significant milestone in joint replacement surgery.

Zimmer Biomet’s ROSA Knee System brings together robotic technology with industry-leading knee implants to help surgeons personalize surgical procedures for their patients. ROSA Knee is a robotically-assisted surgical system designed to help perform total knee replacement surgery. It includes features to assist with bone resections and assessing the state of soft tissues in order to facilitate implant positioning intraoperatively. Data provided by the ROSA Knee System assists with complex decision-making and enables surgeons to use computer and software technology to control and move surgical instruments, allowing for greater precision and flexibility during procedures.

Pinehurst Surgical Clinic Orthopaedic Surgeons John R. Moore, IV, M.D., and Ward S. Oakley, Jr., M.D., performed the first total knee replacements using the ROSA Knee System at Moore Regional, noting that patients experience reduced swelling, faster recovery and improved joint stability.

“The ROSA Knee System has the potential to offer a number of key benefits and advantages for our surgical team and, most importantly, our patients,” said Dr. Oakley. “With its advanced robotic capabilities, we can achieve unprecedented precision and control during the operation, improving overall effectiveness.”

Dr. Moore added, “This technology allows us to offer a more tailored approach to total knee replacement surgery with optimal alignment and fit for each patient’s anatomy, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and recovery times.”

Total joint replacements are some of the most commonly performed elective surgical procedures. More than 1,300 total knee replacements have been performed at Moore Regional in the last year, and 93% of those surgeries were performed on an outpatient basis. Moore Regional Hospital, including its Hoke and Richmond campuses, was recognized this year by Healthgrades as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Joint Replacement.

“As the landscape of joint replacement continues to evolve, Moore Regional remains committed to being at the forefront of innovation and providing patients with the most advanced treatment options available,” said Wayne McFatter, MSN, R.N., CNOR, RNFA, executive director of surgical services for FirstHealth. “The ROSA Knee System is an extension of our continued investment in robotics and technology to enhance care for our patients.”
