HAMLET — The inaugural season of the Boxcar Concert Series came to a close Sunday afternoon with the smooth sounds of jazz.

The All American Jazz Collective, based in Fayetteville, performed several jazz selections at Main Street Park — including a few tunes from Hamlet-born John Coltrane.

The band featured three horn players — trombone, saxophone and trumpet — a piano player, bassist and drummer, and even a vocalist on a few songs.

Depot and Museum Director Mechelle Preslar said the band wanted to play in Hamlet because it was Coltrane’s birthplace.

The Sunday afternoon concert series started in the late spring, taking a break during the warmer summer months, and showcased local and regional bands playing a variety of beach music, classic rock, blues and bluegrass.
