ELLERBE — Children and their parents sifted through silt on Saturday searching for pieces of the past.

The Rankin Museum of American Heritage hosted its semi-annual panning event at the flume, an interactive exhibit that opened in 2017.

This time, it was a fossil dig. Back in May, participants panned for gems.

The Rankin was recently featured in the book ‘Tar Heel Traveler,” along with Hamlet Depot and Museums and more than 200 other sites across the state.
