HAMLET — The Seaboard City didn’t let a little rain stop the annual Independence Day celebration.

Just before dark Saturday evening, as hundreds sat near the Depot and at City Lake in anticipation of the annual fireworks show, it began to rain.

The showers slacked off for a bit and the fireworks were launched — then it started to pour.

Those who remained took shelter behind the Depot and Visitor’s Center — or wherever else they could find it — as the fireworks exploded just above the tree tops.

Earlier in the afternoon, children — and several adults — found respite from the summer heat via the Hamlet Fire Department’s super soaker, set up in front of the Depot.

There was also face-painting and a sidewalk chalk art contest.
