ROCKINGHAM — Prayer warriors packed the concrete pad in front of the old courthouse Thursday to call on God’s blessings for Richmond County.

They were there for the annual Day of Prayer, first organized more than 20 years ago by Sherrell Jackson and the late Cathy Wilson.

“My precious angel mother loved this more than anything, because she loved the Lord more than anything and she loved Richmond County more than anything,” said District Court Judge Amy Wilson, one of the organizers and one of Wilson’s daughters.

Jackson, who until recently owned the local gospel radio station, said it has never rained in the event’s history.

There were several prayers offered in the hour-long lunchtime service from: the Rev. Mike Patrick; the Rev. Jason Gainey, who is also a county commissioner; Bishop Steven Gilmer; the Rev. Mike Childers, who is also a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office; the Rev. Timothy Williams; and pastor Gene Alexander.

There were also musical performances by Darin Dixon, Alex and John Patrick Hutchinson and Riqui’ta Quick, and the opening pledges were delivered by students from Mount Olive Baptist Church Preschool.

Wilson’s sister, Dr. Allison Farrah, gave the benediction which was followed by Lee Wallace leading the crowd in singing “Amazing Grace.”
