HAMLET — The lobby of Cole Auditorium was packed Tuesday evening for the Richmond Community College Choir’s Classical Christmas Concert.

The song selection included classical works like Vivaldi’s “Gloria in Excelsis Deo” and selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” in addition to relatively modern tunes like “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” the latter of which was performed by Sebrina Copper and Darene Martin.

“For several years, several chorus members have requested that we perform classical music,” Dr. Kimberly Goard, choir director, said in a note included in the program.

“As a general distinction, classical music is separate from popular or folk music,” Goard continued. “In our Western tradition, this broad sense of ‘classical music’ dates back earlier than the Renaissance, with the primary classical style seen from 1750 to 1820.

“This concert is a more formal concert than we have done in the past, as we are performing a few pieces that are popular now, but even more music that became popular hundreds of years ago.”

Other featured singers included:

  • Maddie Gibson – “Behold! A Virgin Shall Concieve” and “O Thou that Tellest Good Tidings to Zion
  • Katy Wahl – “There Were Shepherds Abiding in the Field”
  • Corina Cox – “Be Born in Me”
  • Lensha Williams and V.J. Whaley – “Silent Night”
  • Haley White – “Santa Baby”
