ROCKINGHAM — The streets were filled with witches, clowns and other assorted characters Monday evening for the annual Halloween Downtown Spooktacular.

Businesses, government agencies and other organizations passed out candy as hundreds of kids and their families walked from site to site.

“Thank you to the businesses that stepped up and to the citizens who came out,” Mayor John Hutchinson said in a Facebook post following the event. “What a fun time for adults, and what a Halloween treat for Rockingham children!”

Hutchinson stalked the streets as the wizard Gandalf, as he and his family were dressed like characters from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” saga.

Other costumes included Marvel superheroes like Spiderman and Dr. Strange, mermaids, scarecrows, Power Rangers and an assortment of Disney characters.
