HAMLET — Around 20 runners pounded the cross-country trail at Richmond Community College early Saturday for the inaugural Cryptid Crawl.

The untimed 5K fun run was organized by the city of Hamlet as another activity to accompany the second annual EncounterQuest, which was held at Cole Auditorium.

Many of the participants were local — including Hamlet Mayor Amy Guinn, Police Chief Dennis Brown and his family — but the Cryptid Crawl also drew runners from Wilmington, Raleigh and Delaware, according to Mechelle Preslar, director of community engagement.

About midway through the wooded portion of the run, participants had a brief encounter with ScubaSquatch — Scuba Steve in a Bigfoot costume. There were also signs along the way warning of aliens.
