ROCKINGHAM — For nearly three years, Kevin Pattan of Rockingham faced the challenge of pre-diabetes, but in July 2023, his journey to a healthier life took a remarkable turn when he joined the PreventT2 program offered at no charge by FirstHealth Community Health Services.

This free lifestyle change initiative spans 26 classes over a year, empowering individuals in Hoke, Harnett, Richmond, Moore, Montgomery, Scotland and Lee counties to take charge of their health and prevent type 2 diabetes.

Since starting the program, Kevin proudly shared, “I’m down 40 pounds and getting closer to my weight-loss goal. It’s not just about diet—it’s about lifestyle changes, eating healthier and being more active.”

His transformation includes progressing from a 10-minute daily walk to an energizing 35 minutes, showcasing the program’s holistic approach.

Initially keeping a food log as instructed at the start of the program, Kevin now seamlessly incorporates healthy habits into his routine, highlighting the lasting impact of the education provided. The PreventT2 program goes beyond individual efforts, fostering a supportive community where participants, including Kevin, form lasting friendships.

The educational support provided has been life-changing for Kevin, contributing not only to his weight loss but also improving his sleep quality.

“I didn’t realize I wasn’t sleeping well until I started sleeping well,” he shared. With increased energy and improved focus, Kevin no longer needs post-lunch naps that had burdened him, and he feels more accomplished at work.

As a longtime resident of Richmond County, a construction company owner, and an avid outdoorsman, Kevin now embraces life more fully. With renewed energy, he enjoys hunting and fishing, savoring moments with his five-year-old granddaughter, and eagerly anticipating the arrival of twin grandchildren in March.

“Kevin’s success showcases the profound impact the PreventT2 program can have on someone’s life,” said Robert Reeve, M.A., CPRP, health education specialist for FirstHealth Community Health Services and facilitator of Prevent2T. “I encourage others facing similar challenges to embark on a journey towards better health, happiness, and a more fulfilling life through Prevent2T.”
