HAMLET — William He, sophomore at Richmond Early College High School, has been accepted to the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics out of 1700 applicants from across the state.

North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics is a world-class public high school with statewide reach empowering students with the skills and knowledge to design their own future.

Specializing in science, technology, engineering, and math, and embracing the fine arts and humanities, it challenges talented high school juniors and seniors from across North Carolina through a residential program on its historic campus in Durham and on a second campus in Morganton.

NCSSM’s extensive online program and summer offerings extend its impact to every corner of the state and to younger students. Founded in 1980 as the first of its kind, NCSSM has become the model for 18 such specialized schools around the globe and is a member of the 17-institution UNC System. Its 11,000-plus alumni include local and global leaders in medicine, technology, commerce, education, and the arts— a community of problem solvers who build a brighter future. NCSSM has been ranked no. 2 high school in the United States.

His teachers are not surprised by his acceptance.

Former Math 1 instructor, Ismael Gomez, remarked, “William is an outstanding student. As his Math 1 teacher, I enjoyed teaching him because he was a unique and talented mathematician who excelled in every math concept he learned. Because of this, I was able to push him to deepen his understanding of math. Whatever math goals we set together; William made sure to reach all of them. During an entire academic year, he never turned in an assignment late, and he always exceeded the requirements and expectations for his work. In fact, he ranks in the top five percent of his graduating class. He contributes to the classroom culture as a student leader who works well with others and knows how to delegate and execute tasks properly. I am extremely proud of this young man and all the hard work he puts into his academics.”

Sharon Stephens, AIG specialist, agreed.

“It is no surprise William was selected for this prestigious honor. He consistently works above expectations and seeks to excel in every area. It was not uncommon to find him learning code or helping others during his free time. I am so very proud of William and know his positive mindset will take him far!”

Students are selected during their sophomore year through a competitive process that considers each applicant’s interest in science and mathematics, and includes a review of academic records, special talents, accomplishments, extracurricular interests, along with several written essay components. The N.C. General Assembly, with support from Gov. Roy Cooper, authorizes funding that ensures a four-year tuition grant for NCSSM high school graduates who enroll in UNC system universities.

He is involved with Beta Club and Senate at REaCH. William has helped with seasonal events like Halloween and Christmas parties in this capacity. He also helps his parents at their Chinese restaurant, King Gourmet, in Hamlet.

In his own words, He says, “This is a very good opportunity and I feel extremely happy to have been chosen. My attendance at NCSSM will open many doors in terms of going into the field of my choice. I would like to thank my teachers for recommending me to NCSSM. It’s been an honor working with them through the application process.”
