Richmond’s Searcy wins district, divisional American Legion contests, heads to state

ROCKINGHAM — Zane Searcy is on his way to a state oratorical competition for the second consecutive year.

Searcy placed first this past weekend in the American Legion’s annual Oratorical contest, winning in the 4th Division with his speech on the Constitution.

Representing American Legion Post 147 in Rockingham, Searcy won the district competition on Feb. 3.

The state contest will start at noon on Saturday, March 23 in Cary.

According to Post 147 1st Vice-Commander Carlton Hawkins, Searcy is delivering a modified version of the same speech from last year.

In 2023, Searcy won at the district and divisional levels and placed third at the state competition.

Searcy, a senior at Richmond Senior High School, is president of the Senior Senate, plays baseball for the Raiders and the Richmond Renegades and is on the high school swim team. He also served as chief junior marshal at the 2023 graduation.
