Third-grade students across Richmond County Schools received a special gift, thanks to the Rockingham Rotary Club’s annual Dictionary Project.

Members of the Rotary Club hand-delivered dictionaries to all third-grade classrooms, continuing a tradition that has supported students in the county for more than a decade. As they distributed the books, Rotary Club members took time to talk with students about the importance of reading and how learning new words can open doors for their future. By receiving their own dictionary, students are encouraged to explore new words and build vocabulary and language skills that will benefit them throughout their education.

“We appreciate the Rockingham Rotary Club’s ongoing commitment to our students,” said Dr. Joe Ferrell, superintendent of Richmond County Schools. “These dictionaries encourage students to expand their vocabulary, improve their reading, and develop a lifelong love for learning.”

The initiative is funded through the Rockingham Rotary Club’s annual BBQ plate sale, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024. Proceeds from the event help ensure that the tradition of delivering dictionaries to Richmond County’s third graders continues each year.
