ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Community Theatre kicked off its opening night on Thursday with the first showing of “Sanders Family Christmas.”

The play, a sequel to the popular musical “Smoke on the Mountain,” is the second production for the theater’s 42nd year.

“Sanders Family Christmas” follows Connie Ray and Alan Bailey’s successful bluegrass gospel musical and takes place in late December of 1941 as America is going to war.

Dennis Sanders of the Sanders Family Singers is heading off to battle, and Pastor Mervin Oglethorpe and the rest of the Sanders family send him with hilarious and touching stories, including some southern gospel Christmas favorites.

Theater Director Merrie Dawkins said herself, the board of directors and cast and crew were grateful to all who came to see “Sanders Family Christmas” on opening night.
