School supplies will be handed out in several locations on Saturday as Richmond County students prepare to start the new year.
Alcohol and Drug Services is hosting its 11th annual back-to-school event at Dobbins Heights Park from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
The organization will be giving away backpacks filled with education-related items while supplies last.
There will also be a basketball tournament and swimming for the kids, as well as entertainment provided by a step team, cheer team and drumline, according to Shirlyn Sims, early intervention consultant with ADS.
Several exhibitors will be at the park, including the Richmond County Health Department.
The Durham-based Kramden Institute also donated 100 desktop computers to students, who have already been selected based on need. Those will be picked up throughout the afternoon.
“The support we get from the community is awesome,” Sims said.
Abundant Life Church, at 1797 E. Broad Ave., will have a drive-thu giveaway starting at 10 a.m. and lasting until they run out.
Church officials say a parent or guardian must accompany children.
