The Rock goes ‘Up in Smoke’

ROCKINGHAM — The iconic comedy duo Cheech and Chong were in Richmond County Friday making laps around the half-mile Little Rock track at Rockingham Speedway.

Cheech Marin, one half of the legendary team, was behind the wheel while partner Tommy Chong rolled a seven-inch blunt.

The pair was famous in the ‘70s and ‘80s for their cannabis-infused humor, starring in several movies including “Up in Smoke” and “Nice Dreams.”

This week, they decided to make the switch from racy humor to racing.

Cheech was clocked at a whopping 5 mph as a heavy smoke trail followed the car down the backstretch.

Meanwhile, facilities manager Jamie Saad was in the flagstand with a box of Krispy Kreme donuts and a bag of Doritos.

“It was amazing to have stars of their caliber at the track,” said Vice President of Operations Justin Jones. “We’re bringing racing — and weed — back to Rockingham.”

Jones said he is in talks to host a joint concert featuring Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg.
