UNCP’s Esports team competes for PBC title

PEMBROKE — UNC Pembroke’s Esports team is currently in first place in the Peach Belt Conference.

The Braves (7-0) will compete for the regular season title vs. USC Aiken (6-0) Friday at 8 p.m. in the University Center, room 213.

The event is open to the campus community who would like to see the team in action and cheer them on as they compete for the title.

The teams are playing League of Legends in the championship match. Win or lose, UNCP will advance to the tournament championship to be held March 29-30 at Lander University at Greenwood, SC. The top two teams from the championship event will qualify for the national championship.

The Esports team is in their second season of varsity play for BraveNation after the sport was officially added in 2018, and falls under the Office for Campus Engagement and Leadership. Esports, a video gaming team, faces direct competition as well as tournament play.

“UNC Pembroke, win or lose, will complete the biggest turnaround in the brief history of the Peach Belt sport. We had a winless season in 2018, and are now competing for the PBC title. It’s been an incredible year for our team,” said Abdul Ghaffar, director of Campus Engagement and Leadership.

The official 2019 PBC Esports schedule and results can be found at: https://www.peachbeltconference.org/sports/esports/2018-19/schedule.
