WGU North Carolina offers up to $50,000 in Back to School scholarships

DURHAM — With kids and college students back in class again, many adults are contemplating whether or not they should go back to school to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree. WGU North Carolina, an affiliate of the accredited online Western Governors University, has announced that it is offering up to $50,000 in Back to School Scholarships for busy adults who wish to further their education.

The Back to School Scholarships are valued at $2,500 each and will be applied at the rate of $625 per six-month term, renewable for up to four terms. Though multiple scholarships will be awarded, this is a competitive program, and scholarships will be granted based on a candidate’s academic record, financial need, readiness for online study, and current competency, as well as other considerations. To apply, visit www.wgu.edu/B2S. The application deadline is Oct. 31, 2021.

Designed for working adults, WGU offers an asynchronous, competency-based model that allows students to log in and access coursework at a time convenient for them, and to accelerate at their own pace. Tuition is around $4,000 per six-month term for most undergraduate degree programs, and students can take as many courses as they and their assigned mentors are comfortable with during the term.

WGU offers more than 60 bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the fields of business, K-12 teacher education, information technology, and healthcare, including nursing. WGU offers rolling terms, which means a new term starts on the first day of every month — there’s no need to follow a traditional academic calendar and wait for the next semester to start.

“Our students in North Carolina range in age from 17 to 76, so it’s never too late to go to back to school,” said Ben Coulter, Ed.D., chancellor of WGU North Carolina. “We’re here to help North Carolinians take the next step to achieve their desired postsecondary degree, and currently have more than 3,900 students enrolled throughout all 100 counties across the state.”
