Want to explore the effects of air pollution on cognitive health? Interested in learning about efforts to address sexual violence on college campuses? Curious about human trafficking in sports?
These topics and hundreds more will be addressed Saturday at the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium, hosted by Wingate University and South Piedmont Community College.
SNCURCS is an annual event that rotates among private and public institutions across the state to give students at North Carolina universities, colleges and community colleges an opportunity to share their work. This year, some 500 registered attendees from 30 institutions will make more than 400 presentations. Roughly 40 Wingate students are scheduled to present their work.
“Essentially SNCURCS is a showcase of all undergraduate research and creative works of our students in the state,” says Dr. Terese Lund, Wingate’s director of undergraduate research.
Oral presentations will last 10 to 12 minutes followed by a three-minute question-and-answer session. Students presenting a poster to illustrate their work will be assigned specific 90-minute sessions, during which they will stand next to their poster and explain their work, answering questions from attendees. The symposium will also include a performance category.
In addition to the presentations at Wingate, which will kick off at 9:30 a.m. following a breakfast and opening session, South Piedmont will host some 60 students on it’s Monroe campus with oral presentations beginning at 10 a.m. and poster sessions starting at 12:30 p.m.
