ROCKINGHAM — More than 1,200 homes in Richmond County remain without power following a winter storm that moved through the South on Sunday.

As of 1 p.m. Monday, Duke Energy reported that 916 of its customers had no service due to 62 active outages. (Note: some power was restored during the writing of this article.)

More than 36,000 of Duke’ customers across the Carolinas are still without power, including 11,051 in Moore County.

Pee Dee Electric reports that 379 of its customers in Richmond County have no power, the most in its service area. There are still outages in Ansion, Moore, Union, Scotland, Montgomery and Stanly counties.

Many residents did have their power restored, with outages topping 4,400 at one point Sunday afternoon.

Hours of sleet and freezing rain from the storm left trees, vehicles and utility lines covered in ice for much of Sunday.

Areas to the north and west of Richmond received snow, but the National Weather Service has not yet released totals. Accuweather reports that more than a foot of snow was recorded in East Flat Rock in Henderson County.

Accuweather also reported that the storm spawned several tornadoes in Florida, including an EF2 near Fort Meyers that left three people injured and more than 100 homes damaged.

There were a few reports of light snow late Sunday night as the storm pushed northward.

While little ice remains from Sunday, except for in some shaded areas, there is a chance for more winter weather in the near future.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 30% chance of snow on Friday.
