1 charged, 1 cited after gun, pipe found during traffic stop near Hamlet school

HAMLET — A father and son, who both have pending charges, had more added Friday morning following a traffic stop.

As part of the Hamlet Police Department’s effort to step up patrols around the city’s schools, Lt. Donald Ray Morton was near Monroe Avenue Elementary when he noticed a vehicle pass in a no-passing zone, according to police.

He stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Spring and Kent streets to find it had fictitious plates and was uninsured.

During a search of the vehicle, police say they found a meth pipe and an unloaded .380-caliber handgun underneath the passenger seat where William Huckabee was sitting. Two loaded magazines were also reportedly found in the glove box.

William Huckabee was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and carrying a concealed weapon, both misdemeanors. He was released on a $2,500 unsecured bond.

Willie Huckabee was cited for driving without insurance, having a fictitious tag and improper passing.

Police say they are both scheduled to appear in court Oct. 3.

Since online public records with the N.C. Court System no longer list birth dates, the RO was unable to confirm which pending charges corresponded with which defendant.

However, William Huckabee was charged by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office in July with felony larceny, obtaining property by false pretenses and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Online records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Corrections show both have prior convictions.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
