CORDOVA — Two people were airlifted to Chapel Hill late Sunday night after running their dirt bikes into each other, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

Trooper R. Howze said 43-year-old Gary Thrift and an unnamed 13-year-old relative were riding on a road about two-tenths of a mile off Rosayln Road around 10:17 p.m. when they collided head-on.

They sustained a few broken bones and lacerations in the crash, Howze said.

Both were flown to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill and have both been released, according to the trooper.

Due to the engine size, Howze said the dirt bikes are classified as motorcycles.

He said the juvenile was not wearing a helmet, but he’s not yet sure about Thrift.

Cordova Fire and Rescue and FirstHealth EMS both responded.

The crash is still under investigation.
