2 killed in head-on crash south of Hamlet

HAMLET — Two people were killed in an early morning head-on collision on N.C. 38, about 2.6 miles south of Hamlet over the weekend.

Just before 2:30 a.m. Sunday, a Mercedes traveling south on the highway went left of center and crashed into a Ford F-150 in the northbound lane, according to the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Mercedes, 37-year-old Richie Chaco, who had a Fort Bragg address, was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte where he later died.

Two passengers in the truck were also flown to CMC for treatment of their injuries.

The driver of the pickup, 25-year-old Riley Olson of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was flown to a hospital in Florence, South Carolina, and another passenger was treated and released at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond.

Jason Castro, 29, of Myrtle Beach, who was also a passenger in the truck, died at the scene, according to troopers.
