2 more Richmond County residents’ deaths attributed to COVID-19

ROCKINGHAM — Two more Richmond County residents have died from complications due to COVID-19, the Health Department reported Saturday morning.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell announced in a press release that one died in a “nearby hospital” on Friday afternoon and the other died in a hospital outside Richmond County early Saturday morning.

“Please join us with your thoughts and prayers for these families,” Jarrell said.

The county’s death toll from the coronavirus is now at 20.

The county’s first death attributed to COVID-19 was reported on April 10; the second was on April 17; the third on May 30;  the fourth on June 8; the fifth on June 11; the sixth on June 29; the seventh on June 30; the eighth on July 21; the ninth on Aug. 2; the 10th on Aug. 27; the 11th on Aug. 28; and the 12th on Aug. 13.

There were also six deaths reported last month on Sept. 11, 14,15, 21, 22 and 28.

Jarrell said those who have died ranged in age from 31-95 and included four African American females, three African American males, six Caucasian females and seven Caucasian males.

Jarrell also provided a breakdown of the age groups, saying that seven have been 60-69 years old; six 80 or older; five 70-79; and one each in the 30s and 50s.

“Nineteen of the deceased have died in a hospital and one has died outside of a hospital setting,” Jarrell said.

It is not known if any of the patients had underlying conditions.

There have been 3,608 deaths statewide as of Friday, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Johns Hopkins University reports there have been 208,779 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 1,029,518 globally.

The Health Department reported 10 new cases on Friday, making 24 in the first two days of October. Saturday’s numbers had not been released at the time of this report.

Of the 1,072 cases the county has seen since April, 949 have recovered and there were 105 active cases on Friday, with eight hospitalized.

Of all the tests performed, 10,313 have been negative.
