EAST ROCKINGHAM — Crews responded to two suspicious fires at abandoned homes in the Aleo area this weekend.

The East Rockingham Fire Department was dispatched around 5 a.m. Friday to a blaze on Aleo Second Avenue.

Chief Bill Bayless said the roof had already fallen in by the time crews arrived.

The second call went out around 11 p.m. Saturday a block over on Aleo First Avenue, with Cordova Fire and Rescue and the Rockingham Fire Department responding for mutual aid.

Bayless said the vinyl siding was warped on several neighboring homes from the heat.

Both homes had already been partially burned and there was no utility to service to either of them, according to Bayless. He also said the department has responded to the home on Aleo Second Avenue three times within the past year.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
