30th COVID-related death reported in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County has recorded its 30th COVID-related death since the pandemic began seven months ago.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell announced in a press release that the Health Department was informed Monday morning that the patient died in a local hospital on Sunday.

This is the 11th COVID-related death in the county during the month of October and the sixth in the past 11 days. Seven were reported for September.

Of those who have died, 23 have died in a hospital, five have died in another healthcare facility and two have died outside of a healthcare setting, according to Jarrell.

All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 11 have been 80 or older; nine have been in their 60s; seven in their 70s; two in their 50s; and one who was 31.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: three African American females, five African American males, 13 Caucasian females and nine Caucasian males.

It is not known if any of the patients had underlying conditions.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there had been 4,157 COVID-related deaths across the state as of noon Oct. 25. Johns Hopkins University reports there have been 225,239 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 1,155,434 globally.

North Carolina reported a new daily record high on Oct. 23 with 2,716 new cases, according to DHHS.

On that day, Richmond County reported 11 new cases, bringing the total to 1,385.

As of Oct. 23, there were 176 active cases in the county, with 169 under home isolation and seven hospitalized. There had also been 12,844 negative test results returned.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety on Oct. 25 reported 50 active cases at Morrison Correctional Institution.

On Oct. 20, DHHS reported three active staff member cases at PruittHealth and seven cases each among staff and patients at The Hermitage Retirement Center. No deaths were reported at either location.

Monday’s numbers had not been released at the time of this report.
