32nd COVID-related death reported in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County Health officials on Tuesday announced that a 32nd resident has died after contracting COVID-19.

The press release did not directly say exactly when or where the patient died.

However, inferring from the previous death, it appears the patient died in a hospital, making 24 who have passed away in that setting. Six have died in another healthcare setting and two have died outside of a health setting.

This is the 13th death during the month of October.

All patients have been between the ages of 31 and 95: 11 have been 80 or older; nine have been in their 60s; nine in their 70s; two in their 50s; and one who was 31.

The race and gender breakdown is as follows: four African American females, four African American males, 14 Caucasian females and 10 Caucasian males.

Health and Human Services Director Dr. Tommy Jarrell said in the latest release that one male patient previously listed as an African American male has been reclassified as a Caucasian male. 

It is not known if any of the patients had underlying conditions.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, there had been 4,211 COVID-related deaths across the state as of noon Oct. 27. Johns Hopkins University reports (as of 11:11 a.m Oct. 28) there have been 226,777 COVID-related deaths in the U.S. and 1,168,942 globally.

The number of active cases has slowed down in recent days, with only six new cases reported on Monday and Tuesday by the Richmond County Health Department.

The number of active cases on Oct. 27 was 125, with 117 under home isolation and eight hospitalized. 

The active cases have dropped from 182 on Oct. 22.

Many of those cases were from Morrison Correctional Institution, with a total of 51 active on Monday. That number has reduced to only three.

Of the county’s 1,403 total cases since April, 1,247 have recovered. Of all the tests performed 13,327 have returned a negative result.
