4 more file to run in Richmond County municipal elections

ROCKINGHAM — One municipal election in Richmond County got more interesting Wednesday with a challenger entering the race.

Mary Magee threw her proverbial name in the hat for the Dobbins Heights Town Council election slated for Oct. 5, according to Elections Director Connie Kelly.

Magee, former clerk of the town, will be vying for one of the two seats currently occupied by Councilwoman Angeline David and Mayor Pro Tem Tyré Holloway, both of whom have already filed.

But Magee wasn’t the only challenger in the upcoming elections to file.

Kyonna Jones is running for Hoffman Town Council.

Council members Ricardo “Ricky” Anderson, Daniel Kelly and Rory K. Jones and Cynthia Nothcutt, as well as Mayor Tommy Hart, all filed within the first six days.

Councilman John Taylor is the only sitting member who has not yet filed.

All seats in Hoffman are up for reelection, as that town has two-year, non-staggered terms.

Elsie Freeman and Jean Fletcher also filed Wednesday to retain their seats on the Ellerbe Board of Commissioners.

There are four seats on that board up for grabs, including the two held by Freeman and Fletcher. Archie Robinson and John Sears Jr. have yet to file.

However, two newcomers — Thomas R. Grooms and Bennett Hawks — are also vying for a seat on that board.

Ellerbe Mayor Fred Cloninger filed on Tuesday.

All current elected officials in Hamlet — Mayor Bill Bayless and councilmen Jesse McQueen and Eddie Martin — and Rockingham — Mayor Steve Morris, and council members Anne Edwards, Gene Willard and Denise Sullivan — have also filed with no competition.

The top two vote-getters in the Rockingham election will have a four-year term and the third-highest will serve a two-year term.

The elections for Rockingham, Hamlet, Ellerbe and Hoffman will be Nov. 2.

Filing fees are as follows:

  • $30 – Hamlet mayor
  • $10 – Rockingham mayor, Rockingham City Council, Hamlet City Council, Ellerbe Mayor, Ellerbe Town Commission
  • $5 – Dobbins Height Town Council, Hoffman mayor, Hoffman City Council

Filing began at noon July 2 and ends at noon July 16.
